About Joan
A woman with a mission...
Joan has successfully made that often difficult transition from working for someone else to creating meaningful work that honors her personal style. She is now committed to helping others to achieve the same. Joan was happily employed as a regional training manager for Brentano's Bookstore (bought by Border's) in 1992 when she was struck with a debilitating illness. Shortly thereafter Joan was diagnosed with Crohn's Disease.
Though her symptoms were stabilized by the end of the year, her ability to effectively run the store she managed was impacted and she eventually left the company. She subsequently held several other positions in different companies but would periodically have to take one to two months off on disability to become well again. Joan eventually followed her heart and started her own business doing something she was passionate about. You could say it was the gift embedded in the challenge.
Joan's experiences learning to live and work while dealing with fluxuating symptoms of a chronic illnesses have shaped her outlook on work. It's easy for her to see the extent to which people box themselves in and make decisions about their lives that don't honor their inner guidance. She's acutely aware of the impact of busyness on health, and the ridiculous expectations people place on themselves.
Joan taps into the many jobs and positions she has held over the years in a variety of industries. She's worked in retail, non-profit organizations, insurance companies, public health care and in executive search firms, to name a few. She says that Brentano's and Waldenbooks were among the best run companies she's worked for and she models her work with clients on her experiences learning to be a successful store manager, the skills she recognizes come naturally to her, and her experiences training other store managers.
At this time, Joan's symptoms are in remission, and she's extraordinarily grateful for the energy she has. She's written a book with author and coach, Rosalind Joffe, M.Ed., to support other women living and working with chronic illness just out in May 2008.
